East Lothian
Road/Trail Blairadam Enduro 3rd October 1999
SACU National Championship
A closely fought event with Richard Hay returning to
Scottish action after British and World Rounds. With course times fairly relaxed for all
classes due to the threat of rain the deciding battles were always going to be over the
special test. A combination of a fast blast through a wooped section followed by a
short road section then into a tight taped woodland area. Any mistakes would be punished
and a flowing test would win.
The course was run in Blairadam Forest at Kelty in Fife over
Forest Enterprise land and had some forest road work combined with a downhill mountainbike
section and slippy climbs . Rain for the previous two weeks meant the course was very
slippy on the first lap but seemed to improve as the day went on. Sportsman avoided the
only bog , which was meshed to give grip but still caught a few riders unawares - usually
when there were spectators
Richard Hay won the expert class by ten seconds from Derek
Little who showed rising star Euan McConnell the way home also by ten seconds. Euan
finished above Richard and Derek at the recent ISDE but still needs to practice on his
home turf to beat the established riders.
Stewart Livingston finished ahead of Keith Baird and Geoff
Pennycook . With only a few points separating them at the top of the points table there is
all to play for at the Melville enduro at Yair. Test times were very close with only a
second separating 3rd 4th and 5th.
Hugh Richards won the Sportsman class with some very fast
times and must be looking to compete in the clubman class next year. Pauline Hay was the
only lady out on the course and will hopefully be going for the new ladies award
next year .
