WRTA Crychan Motul British Enduro Championship 2005

Report from Campbell Chatham

The weather on Friday was looking promising as the riders walked the special test in the sun. On Saturday the weather forecast proved correct and the heavens opened, it rained all day and just as it seemed to lighten up the rain came back even harder. What looked like an enjoyable course turned into a war zone. Some Championship riders lost time at the first forest check which set the tone for a long day. The conditions were treacherous and the organisers cut a lap off the Championship class and the Experts. The riders that made it back to the MX test at the rugby club really felt they had achieved something special. There was a fallen tree in the MX test that the experienced trials riders were able to ride over and save a few seconds. The cross country test was on the side of a hill with natural jumps, once it started to rain it proved difficult to ride around at all, never mind at speed. Ed Jones was spectacular on his 125 flat out
and side ways everywhere. On Sunday the weather was slightly better and the worst parts of the course were cut making the tracks passable. Some riders had suggested the course was impossible in places on Saturday, although there were plenty of riders who finished.

Paul Edmondson emerged as the winner by 6 seconds on Saturday but David Knight pulled it back on Sunday to win overall.Paul Whibley was 3rd and Ed Jones 4th.

Chris Hay was one of the first casualties as he had pulled a muscle training on Wednesday before the event and the conditions made it
impossible to compete while injured.

Ricky Mair was top Scot with his changing fortunes earning him 11th overall and 5th E1 in the Championship Class. I am delighted all his
efforts are being rewarded at last.

Richard Hay lost some time but the 'Iron Man of Enduros' had to admit that even he had found this years event tough although he enjoyed the conditions on Sunday.

Euan McConnell lost time and had a bad final cross country test on Saturday but he made it to the finish. On Sunday he pulled back a few
places in the improved conditions.

Crawford Carrick Anderson decided to save money as he has started a new business and travelled to Elgin instead.Jeff McCleary did not start so there were no Scottish riders in the Expert Class.

Graeme Naismith had a nightmare Saturday but managed to finish well in the Clubman Class. Graeme finished 3rd on Saturday despite suffered a number of problems including his exhaust coming off at the head, flipping the bike upside down and a Marshall trying to put the wrong time on his time card. Graeme won the Clubman Class on Sunday just missing out on the overall to Ashley Wood.

Paul Chatham was running on time on Saturday until he was hit in the eye by a stone. Paul could not see for 10 minutes and lost time at the next check. A paramedic cleaned out his eye and he bravely soldiered on to the finish loosing a total of 24 minutes. The points that he earned for 11th place may prove very useful at the end of the season for the E1 Championship. On Sunday Paul stayed on time and gained valuable experience in the mud through the difficult Cross Country tests and finished 5th E1 Clubman.
